An Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card is a document issued to certain individuals of Indian origin who live outside of India. The OCI card is a lifelong visa for the holder, allowing them to enter and exit India at any time and stay in the country for an indefinite period. The OCI card also grants certain benefits and privileges such as visa-free travel to India, the ability to work and study in India and the ability to purchase commercial property in India. However, it does not grant Indian citizenship or voting rights. OCI cardholders are still considered citizens of their home country and are subject to its laws and regulations.
The OCI card should be applied for and obtained before the individual travels to India. Once issued, the OCI card must be carried at all times while in India and presented to immigration officials upon arrival.
To apply for an OCI card, individuals must meet certain eligibility criteria and submit their application online at ociservices.gov.in. The application process requires the submission of a photograph and various identification documents, as well as payment of an application fee. The fee for applications made outside of India is $275, while the fee for those submitted within India is ₹15,000 (approximately $190). As part of the application process, applicants must provide proof of their current citizenship by submitting a copy of their passport with a validity of at least 6 months. If the applicant is in India at the time of application, they must also submit a copy of any Indian visa (excluding missionary and mountaineering visas) or a residential permit with a validity of at least 3 months. Additionally, applicants must provide evidence of Indian origin, such as a copy of an Indian passport, a Domicile Certificate, or a Nativity Certificate issued by a competent authority. Other forms of evidence may also be accepted.
