GARSHOM BEST MALAYALEE ASSOCIATION AWARD 2024

MAUK-logo-GarshomMalayalee Association of the UK (MAUK) has been a cornerstone of support and cultural pride for the Malayalee community in the UK since its founding in 1974. Established to help Malayalee immigrants settle and thrive in the United Kingdom, MAUK. has grown into a respected organization known for its dedication to preserving Kerala’s heritage and fostering community welfare.

Originating from gatherings initiated by V.K. Krishna Menon in the 1930s, MAUK became a registered charity in 1987. A landmark moment in its journey was the acquisition of Kerala House, the first Malayalee-owned community center in the Western world, which has since become a hub for cultural activities, including Onam celebrations, music and dance workshops, and Malayalam language classes. Over the years, MAUK has also formed cultural groups such as the Dhrishykala drama troupe and the Nisari music troupe, promoting Kerala’s rich arts to broader audiences in the United Kingdom.

MAUK has consistently focused on supporting all generations within the community. It established the Elders Club and the 60+ Sisters Club, providing social and emotional support for elderly members, many of whom are first-generation immigrants. The association has also played a vital role in social welfare, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it launched a food bank to support international students, migrants, and local families in need.

Beyond its work in the United Kingdom, MAUK has been instrumental in charitable initiatives in Kerala. In 2018, the association raised over £50,000 for flood relief efforts in Kerala and has since funded housing and water treatment projects through its charity wing, Thanal. These efforts continue to make a meaningful impact on underprivileged communities in Kerala.

As MAUK celebrates nearly 50 years of service, it remains a vibrant, community-focused organization, dedicated to cultural preservation, charitable outreach, and creating a strong sense of unity. With 520 member families, a democratically elected leadership, and a commitment to transparency, MAUK continues to empower the Malayalee diaspora in the U.K. and extend its positive influence across borders.
