പക്ഷികളുടെ ആയുസ് പൊതുവെ ഇരുപത് വര്ഷം പോലും കടക്കാറില്ല. ഇതിനോടകം അവ അടുത്ത തലമുറയെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന പ്രക്രിയകളും മുട്ടയിടീലും നടത്തിയിരിക്കും. എന്നാല് 66 വയസുള്ള ഒരു പക്ഷിയമ്മ മുട്ടയിട്ട് കുഞ്ഞുണ്ടാകാന് കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന വാര്ത്ത ജന്തുശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്മാരെപ്പോലും അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുകയാണ്.
മിഡ്വേ ദ്വീപിലെ വന്യജീവി സങ്കേതത്തിലുള്ള വിസ്ഡം എന്ന് വിളിപ്പേരുള്ള ലേയ്സന് ആല്ബട്രോസ് എന്ന കടല് പക്ഷിയാണ് 66ാം വയസില് മുട്ടയിട്ട് അടയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഒരു മാസത്തിനുള്ളില് മുട്ട വിരിയുമെന്നാണ് പ്രതീക്ഷ. അങ്ങനെ മുട്ട വിരിഞ്ഞാല് ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രായം ചെന്ന പക്ഷിയമ്മയായി വിസ്ഡത്തിനെ വാഴിക്കേണ്ടി വരും. ഇപ്പോള് വിസ്ഡത്തിനൊപ്പമുള്ളത് ഏഴാമത്തെ ഇണയാണ്. വിസ്ഡത്തിന് ഏതാണ്ട് നാലു ഡസനോളം കുട്ടികള് ഉണ്ടെന്നാണ് ഗവേഷകരുടെ നിഗമനം.
ലേയ്സന് ആല്ബട്രോസിന്റെ കോളനിയാണ് മിഡ്വേ ദ്വീപ് എന്ന് വേണമെങ്കില് പറയാം. ലോകത്തിലെ 70 ശതമാനം ലേയ്സന് ആല്ബട്രോസ് പക്ഷികളും ഇവിടെയാണുള്ളത്. ഈ വിഭാഗത്തില് പെട്ട പക്ഷികള് എല്ലാ വര്ഷവും മുട്ടയിടാറില്ല. മുട്ടയിടുമ്പോള് ഒരു മുട്ട മാത്രമേ ഇടാറുള്ളൂ എന്നതും ഇവയുടെ പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്. കടലില് നിന്നും ഇണചേരാനും മുട്ടയിടാനുമായി ഇവ ഈ ദ്വീപിലേക്കെത്തുന്നത് ഒക്ടോബര് നവംബര് മാസങ്ങളിലാണ്. മുന് വര്ഷങ്ങളില് തയാറാക്കിയ കൂട്ടില് മിനുക്കു പണികള് നടത്തിയാണ് വീണ്ടും മുട്ടയിടുന്നത്.
